Veteran Scholarship

The Purpose:

The Semper Fi Riders (SFR) organization holds and administers certain funds that provide scholarships that pay for individuals belonging to the Veteran community to attend an educational institution – a school that has a faculty, a student body, a physical location, and a curriculum. This could be a primary or secondary school, a public or private college or university, or a vocational school. These scholarships are described in Section 4945(g)(1) of the IRS Tax Code.

Scholarship Criteria

(Applications not meeting this criteria will be discarded):

Scholarship criteria are primarily based on the 500-word essay answers to the following five questions:

  1. "Who is the Veteran that introduced you to the Veteran Community?"

  2. "What did this Veteran do that impacted you in understanding the Veteran Community?"

  3. “What does being in the Veteran community mean to you?"

  4. "How can you use your experience in the veteran community to help others in the Veteran community?”

  5. "Why do you think you need and deserve this scholarship?"

Secondary criteria may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prior academic performance

  • Recommendations from instructors of such applicant and any others who know the applicant’s capabilities

  • Additional biographical information regarding an applicant’s career, academic and other relevant experiences.

Scholarship recipients must be primary or secondary school students, undergraduate or graduate students at a college or university who are pursuing studies or conducting research to meet the requirements for an academic or professional degree, or students – whether full-time or part-time – who receive a scholarship for study at an educational institution that provides an educational program acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s or higher degree, or offers a training program to prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation and is authorized under federal or state law to provide such a program and is accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency. All scholarships must be used for tuition, room and board, materials, fees, and related expenses.
